Chemistry for Engineers and Scientists

(formerly the IChemE accredited course, Chemistry for Chemical Engineers)

A 3-DAY RESIDENTIAL COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
10th-12th September 2012

Organised in association with the Royal Society of Chemistry Process Technology Group

This is a three day course to be held at the University of Leeds on 10th-12th September 2012 designed to familiarise people from a variety of engineering and science related disciplines with the fundamentals of modern chemistry. It is organised in association with the RSC Process Technology Group, and was formerly the IChemE approved short course, Chemistry for Chemical Engineers. The course will also be very useful for anyone with a scientific background wishing to refresh their basic chemical knowledge.
Comments from attendees at the 2010 course:
Excellent course - would recommend it to other engineers (comment by pharmaceutical process engineer).
I haven't done chemistry since my GCSEs, and I understood it because the lecturers were really good!
Excellent course. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend!! Thank you so much.
Excellently taught and broad depth of knowledge provided - would thoroughly recommend!

It is common for chemists to work alongside scientists and engineers in many areas of industry and academia. The ability to communicate between disciplines is crucial, but requires a basic level of knowledge and understanding of fundamental chemical concepts.

The course is developed by a multidisciplinary group of chemists and chemical engineers at the University of Leeds, with the aim of bridging the knowledge gap to enable effective collaboration. It will involve a combination of lectures, workshops and demonstrations covering basic chemical topics, with a selection of more advanced topics available on the final day. Extensive notes will be provided throughout.

About the course
The first two days of the course are designed to cover relatively fundamental concepts of organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry. We believe this relatively broad introduction is necessary to give a good overall grasp of chemical concepts.
The final day will involve practical work, and a selection of more advanced topics chosen from: The Chemistry of Polymers; The Chemistry of Dyes; New Chemical Technologies for Synthesis; The organic chemistry of drug synthesis; Biological Chemistry; Radioactivity; Electrochemistry and Corrosion; Particles and Colloids; Molecular Modelling; Green Chemistry, Process Analytical Technology for Crystallisation, the Chemistry of Carbon Capture and Storage and the Chemistry of Phosphorus.

Course fees for 2012 are as follows:

A limited number of bursaries are available for registered PhD students which cover costs of registration and the course dinner (but not travel or accommodation). Closing date for applications is 30th June 2012. For further information, please contact Professor Rayner
